    Once upon a time there lived an Austrian soldier who left his job and went out as a tramp.

    O'Byrne was very tired, and he went up to bed again. In the morning the owner came to the house and he was surprised to see the man there. He gave him a hundred pounds.
    He was asked to stay a second night and he agreed to stay.
    The second night the same things happened. First the dog barked and then the soot fell.
    "Damn that soot," he said. Then he went down to the kitchen and a voice said to him:
    "Will you fight a duel?" and he said he would. Then a man appeared on the hearth and they started to fight. First O'Byrne cut off the head of the ghost and he fell. Then he appeared with two heads.
