- Sometime after old Fenton's death, his son had a tradesman, carpenter from Easkey, 4 miles distant, working for him. The tradesman came every morning and went home at night. One day he worked later than usual and young Fenton told him it was too late to go home that night and asked him to stay and sleep with the Coachman. The tradesman consented and went to the Coachman's quarters over the coach house. The two sat, chatting, round a blazing fire till it was time to retire for the night. The coachman then told him to sleep in the inside of the bed and that he would sleep outside next the fire. Before the coachman got into bed he stuck a long iron bar like the rod iron of a cart, into the fire. The tradesman was surprised at this but asked no questions.About midnight both men heard a heavy step coming toward the door and then to the bed. Immediately the coachman seized the iron bar, waited till the ghost came within reach and then made a thrust at him with the red hot iron bar.(continues on next page)
