    body of soldiers, these soldiers were commanded by a Catholic Colonel named McNamara. Fenton being High Sheriff was on the bench that day. The Colonel went in and asked Fenton if it were true that he had sworn an oath to shoot a Catholic priest Fr Devine. Fenton replied in the affirmative. The Colonel drew his revolver and holding it in his hand he said to Fenton "take that book and swear that you will not shoot him or I will shoot you on the minute you cowardly dog". Fenton kissed the book and swore that he would never shoot or hang another.
