- When St Patrick was in Ireland he banished all the serpents and reptiles out of the country. He started one (which was in the form of a black pig) from the Reek in Mayo, and as he was coming along the Ox Mountains he came to a place called Bauliff where there was a river to be crossed. There where stepping stones in this river and St Patrick stepped on what he thought was one of these stones, but what turned out to be a salmon. He slipped into the river, and a salmon has never passed or rested there since that day.St Patrick continued his journey after the pig that climbed a very steep part of the mountain and rooted a deep burrow in the side of the hill and to this day that place is called "Sgriob na Muc". The serpent soiled all the wells as he went along and when St Patrick was thirsty he had to bless the ground and a clean well bubbled up and that is why so many holy wells are on this route. St Patrick stabbed the pig with spear and killed him as he was about to enter the lake in Donegal. His blood coloured the water red and that is the why the lake is called "Lough Dearg" up to the present day. There is a small island in the(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
