- (continued from previous page)the barn and whislt doing so he heard the monks snoring. He ran in and told his master that strangers were sleeping in the barn. He ordered him to bring the strangers before him. When he saw them he got very angry and got his axe with the intention of killing them both.
The older of the two monks sought and obtained permission to say a few words before his death. He mounted a table and delivered a very touching sermon on the other worlds. When he had finished he told the gentleman to kill him. I will not said the gentleman but you both have my permission to sleep in this house. With that he made a bed of straw for them in the corner and while doing this tears flowed down this cheeks so copiously that they filled his boots.
The monk and the whole household retired for the night. The older monk slept little. During the night the devil and Saint Michael came into the kitched and began to argue. he is mine said Saint Michael. He is not said the devil. Finally they got a big(continues on next page)
