An attempt was once made to unearth gold in Ballyheigue.
It is said a man named Diggin had a dream three nights in succession that gold was buried in a certain place but that someone would lose his life in the attempt to find it. Diggin, accompanied by some followers went in search of the gold. Around the place where the gold was buried was covered with bushes, so they carried a scythe to cut them down. When they were cut the men started digging up the earth.
After a while one man's spade struck a big flag over the can of gold. Then a big bull ran at, and Diggin ran to hit him.
He missed his aim and who should he hit but a dummy who was in the crowd and cut(continues on next page)
