- One night in January 1839 a captain named Crangle set sail from Sligo Harbour. There was a terrible storm raging and the people tried to persuade him not to go but he, having no belief or fear in God, set off, saying,
" I will sail away,
If I have to sail until the judgment day. "
He had only reached Raughly when his ship sank and he was drowned.People say that his ship is to be seen whenever there is a shipwreck.Crangle's night was the stormiest in memory. The salt water was blown up from the sea at Innismurray as far as the mountains around here and even as far as Manorhamilton 15 or 16 miles away.Often the old people were heard telling about that awful night.I heard this from my uncle Thomas McGloin, Lislahally, Drumcliff, Sligo.
