- The patron Saint of this parish is Saint Molaise. He lived in Inishmurray and had his Monastery there. It was he who pronounced the sentence of banishment on St Columba. Since his time many remarkable things are told about the island.
There is a chapel in it and although it is very small it cannot be filled.
There are stones on it and no matter how often they are counted a different number is got.
There are other stones called “The Cursing Stones” and if a person owes another a grudge he has nothing to do but turn one of these and he can do harm to him if he wishes.
If a man is buried in a woman’s grave there he will be overground next morning.
There were no rats in Inishmurray until one time a man killed another man’s horse and the horse formed into a rats.
It is also said that before that the clay taken out of the island would rid a place of this pest.
No mice can live on the island. Not long since a mouse happened to be brought there in a load of straw and he was seen near the shore dead next day.(continues on next page)- Collector
