- In John Mullaney's old house soap was made from tallow by John Shiel. The soap was soft and good for washing. He brought the tallow in big boilers and had three colours of tallow, white, blue and brown.
Mr. Shiel had a fire at the back of the house and a boiler which would hold almost twenty gallons of water. The soap was in bars of about four and a half pounds. This bar cost one and a penny half-penny or three pence a pound.
