- Times and the mode of living change as the years roll by. In the years of the famine, the people of Eire, lived on small unripened potatoes and oat meal porridge and oaten bread.
The poor of this period lived on Indian Meal Porridge. This Indian Meal was distributed through depots in every townland to the people. The competition for those depots was a source of wire-pulling and in a great many cases the poorest were often cut short of their rightful share of the meal.
