  1. (continued from previous page)
    Near Killiney's old Churchyard
    Walking musingly homeward
    I espied a phamton queer
So I fancied- fairly near -
Was it fancy? Was it fear?
Were my nerves playing me a trick.?
I comenced to feel quite sick.
"Never", thought I, "ghost or ghoul,
Has been known on earth or prowl,
Four full hours before midnight (2)
-I shall not give way to fright.
Come what may this blessed night."
    Nought disturbed the scene around
    Nothing stirred above the ground
But my footsteps on the road
As along the way I strode
The air was still as still could be
Save a murmur from the sea
Beasts and birds had sought their rest
