Every letter should begin with “I take this pen in hand to endite you these four lines hoping to find you in as good state of health, as the mailing of this letter finds me at present, thanks be to God for his mercies to us all etc. etc. Some people today look down with scorn on the hedge-schools, but it was really their labours that kept education alive in Ireland during the Penal Times.
