" A Story"
There is a fort in Brosna parish on the bank of the Feale. It is known locally as the "Gaoire" and is supposed to be inhabited by " the good people". Old people tell of some strange happenings from this fort.
A man hearing that a treasure was buried in a certain part of the fort went to dig it out. After digging there all day he found some curious old dishes, he took them home, but that night he got no sleep with strange noises, bangings and voices round his house. Early next morning he took back the dishes and buried them exactly where he found them.
Another story is told of a man who went to plough the land inside the fort, he turned one "scribe" the length of the fort and when he turned to plough back he found a trail of blood all along where he had turned, this man took sick and died in a few days.
In later years an old man went there to get firing. He cut down a white-thorn tree and sawed(continues on next page)- Collector
