- (continued from previous page)curled about and matted into each other and very little of it could be done at a time because ones fingers became quite sore from it and the skin was broken and bled.Everybody in the house including "callers" for the night worked at the combing of the hair for a short time every night until the work was finished. The work was done so thoroughly that practically every rib of curled hair was at one time or another separated from every other rib.Older men who served hard labour sentences in gaol duirng the Land League Campaign told me that one of the "occupations" at which prisoners were engaged was similar to the picking of of curled hair. One of those men was my Uncle Connie O'Donoghue Ruisín Beag Glenflesk Killarney. He died in 1910 at the age of about sixty-five. He served a hard labour sentence in Tralee Gaol for marching in a Victory Parade in Killarney.The rope they got was tarred and each man had to separate the hairs of a certain length of it.
