    "Picking Oakham." He used to sing a song about the daily routine of a prisoner's life during that period. One line was:-
    "To pick a pound of "oakham" sure I'd rather live in hell"
    This gives an idea of how difficult the picking of curled hair was. A few balls of rope when "picked" would fill a flour bag.
    By the way a small change was made in prison life as a result of what happened one day when my Uncle Connie O'Donoghue was in gaol.
    When at exercise the prisoners were made to march around a small circle one after another with a warder in charge. It was annoying to the prisoners to be marching in the same direction constantly.
    One day Connie was getting a reeling in his head from going in one direction and all of a sudden shouted "About turn." The prisoners all thought the order came from the warder
