He condemned the wholesale slaughter of salmon during the spawning season and instanced one case where a party of whom he was one fished teh Flesk from the Weir neart Killarney to Gontahoosh Bridge on the Killarney Glenfesk Road. They killed in all ninety-six salmon and a horse and butt was used for bringing them home.
Nobody would dream of fishing on Christmas Eve night. Years and years ago a neighbour had no fish for the Christmas (Eve) First Supper.
There are two suppers on that night; the first is eaten about six oclock and consists of potatoes and fish. Into each plate of fish is put a piece of butter.
He determined in getting fish and there was no risk as neither police nor bailiffs were out that night. He went into a ford which was alive with fish and though he drew at several he never hit one. At last they were so plentiful about his feet that he walked on one, slipped off it and lost his "toarch"
Since that time nobody would ever dream of fishing on Christmas (Eve) Night.
