- Churning is the principal means to get butter. First the cream is gathered into crocks, where it remains for sometime to thicken. When the milk is ready it is turned into the churn and then it is churned. During the churning there is water put into the churn to separate the milk from the cream. When the milk is churned, the butter is put into pound rolls.We have a churn at home. It is a dash churn. It is three feet high and two feet wide.
