As the sun sank in the west,
On a glorious harvest eve,
The golden grain stood in the stooks
As we the fields did leave,

On the 27th of September as I did go to rest
Little thinking that the morrow
Would give new life by birth

At break of day the Nurse was called.
The doctor followed hard
A baby girl to us was born,
To make our hearts right glad,

We spent the day in idleness
We could have chimed the bells
But alas! a river yet to cross,
Its width no man can tell.

The doctor soon he told us,
Of danger running high,
