  1. I live in Monaghan district in the townland of Raconell in the Parish of Tydavnet. There are three families living in the townland. There are two slated houses and one thatched house. There are two men over 70 in the townland. The do not speak Irish. People in great numbers emigrated to America in former times. There is a wood in the townland. It is called Nixon's wood. The River Blackwater runs to the north east some distance from our house. Behind our orchard there is a hill called the Bell hill. It is said that in the olden times there was a big estate below the hill and on the top of the hill there was a tower and a bell in it to warn the soldiers if there was any danger in the district. Behind Mr. Sam Gordon's house on the top of the hill there was a fort and a moat around it and a drawbridge. There is still evidence of the existence of this fort. A number of trees are growing in a circle and a mound shows where the moat was.
