- The name of our patron saint is St. Macartan. He received Christian baptism at the hands of St. Patrick in the townland of Dromahaire. He was the first bishop of Clogher and it was St. Patrick who consecrated him bishop. St. Patrick also gave him his own staff and a shrine which contained among other precious relics, a piece of the Blessed Virgin's hair. He often aided St. Patrick when he was tired and weary and often carried him across rivers.St. Macartan won many obdurate hearts for God during his life. Once when a man would not believe in God he pointed to a vast rock nearby, and asked the man if it could be made into three parts. The man began to think on the difficulty and then said it would be impossible. Then the saint bade the rock to divide in this manner, which immediately(continues on next page)
