- At the time of the famine in Ireland some people made porridge and all the poor people in the district went to those houses and got a noggin of porridge. The people called those houses "porridge houses". There were several houses in the district.

- The funerals in olden times were carried out in an honest poor way. The local carpenter would come to the poor man or woman's house to make the coffin. The coffins were made out of rough coarse boards covered with dark brown cloth. There were no pillows. There was just a little pillow of straw for the corpse head and a little bundle of straw for a bed. The day of the funeral there were no motor herses nor horse herses. There were two pieces of timber or perhaps a cutting of ash or sally for hand spokes.
