John Roche was a hedge school master. He lived at the corner of the wood which is now cut down. My grandfather went to school to him in the year 1860. He had twenty scholars. He was getting 5s a quarter from each scholar. They learned no Irish only what Irish he taught them in Irish conversation.
Hubi Connor and Pat Maci were hedge schoolmasters also. Hubi Connor taught at Tralia. Pat Maci taught at Rockfield.
Roche's school ran concurrently with the National School for 20 years.
