[two diagrams of a candle mould]
A hole was made in a sod of turf and the candle-mould put standing in it, the pointed end in the sod. The wick must be kept in the centre of the mould while pouring in the fat. This was done by placing a nail flat on the open end of the mould and tying the cord in the middle of it. The nail is twisted now and again, while pouring in the fat, in order to put a twist on the cotton threads. When full, the mould is allowed to stand in this position until the tallow is hard and cold. The candle can then be taken out, by catching the nail and drawing out the candle.
