- There is only one forge in my parish. John Sullivan is the smith. His father and grandfather were smiths. This forge is situated in the townland of Caherdean, parish of Ballyhar, Co. Kerry. It is on the roadside and is also near a stream.
This forge has a square base measuring about eighteen feet. The walls are made of stone and mortor and it is roofed with felt. There is one door and one window in it. The door is almost six feet square. There is one fireplace within.
The bellows is the old type which is worked by the hand (see sketch in margin). The bellows was not made locally. It was purchased in Tralee.
The blacksmith chief tools are, a sledge, a hammer, a tongs, a rasp, a punch, a buffer, a hardy, a pincers, the cleft, the(continues on next page)- Collector
