    nine o'clock at night. Each meal consisted of potatoes and sour milk from which the cream had been skimmed. As a rule people worked for three hours before breakfast from March to October. In summer when potatoes were scarce people used to eat bread made from Indian meal wet with water. Sometimes a little flour would be mixed with the meal. In such cases sour milk instead of water was used to wet them. In summer, the supper consisted of stirabout. This was prepared as follows. First water was boiled in a pot. To this was added some Indian meal which was stirred with a little stick. A little salt was added to flavour it. The mixture was allowed over the fire for half an hour or so. Then it was fit for use. When it was cooled a little of it was poured into plates. Then it was eaten with a little skimmed milk added.
