- (continued from previous page)now set, that is, it was placed in some sort of casing where it was left till it had become hard. The thatch was got from rushes, oaten straw, wheaten straw and in several cases heather was used.
The bed was in the kitchen as there was only one apartment in most of the houses. The chimney was in the gable, therefore the fireplace was by the gable. The front of the chimney was made of wattles and clay. In each house there was one window, two feet high and eighteen inches wide. There were four panes of glass in each window. Occasionally windows having only one pane of glass were seen. Such windows were very small. The pane measured nine inches by eight inches or so.
The old floors were made of mud. Half doors were very common formerly. They are very rare at present. Turf principally, was used as fire. Bog - deal was also used frequently.
