- Log ago the people made different kinds of bread. They made it of yellow meal which they called "yellow buck." They made bread of flour also and they made "scrampi"[?] whith grated potatoes and flour mixed through it. They cooked it on a griddle in olden times but now they have "ovens" for baking in. There were two eavs[?] in some griddles to put in the "hangers" to hang it on the fire but others were put on a "stand" on the fire. People ground and grew their own wheat.
In querns they ground it. The querns were two large ridged stones which had a hole in the middle. They were laid on each other and a stick was driven through the middle to twist them. People made bread of corn also and they called it oatmeal bread. The stand they had for under the griddle was three corner stand(continues on next page)
