- In the penal days priests were not allowed to say mass openly. Mass used to be said in old ruins and lonely places. There was a little house in one of the woods of Garisker and it was called "The Hut". It was like a summer house. It was thatched with rushes and the floor was lined with elephants tusks. There was a good family named Langan and they used to get a priests to say mass every Sunday.
People used to come from miles around to hear mass. The Chalice used was in Garisker House up to nine or ten years ago. When the land was divided a man named Sir Walter Nugent took it away. The remains of the hut are still to be seen.
Garisker is near the village of Broadford, Co Kildare. The house was taken down(continues on next page)- Collector
