  1. In by gone days the local people were very poor, but thrifty. They never bought bread in the shops, but made all their own bread which was always made from oaten meal.
    I understand from information I received some time ago that oaten bread was made thus: About one pound of oaten meal was put into a basin then some salt was added and sometimes melted butter.
