    wells so that "The Blessed Virgin" may bring a blessing on themselves and their stock for the following year.
    On the night of May Eve the head of every Catholic family sprinkles holy water on his animals lest any ill-luck might befall them during the coming year.
    On May morning no country woman will allow any lighted ashes to be thrown out, or any milk to be given away lest any ill-luck might come to her butter during the coming year.
    Those old customs still prevail in my district on May Eve and May Day.
