- The houses in Ireland, long ago, were very badly made, they were very small, and badly ventilated. They were generally built, with earth and mud, and yellow clay, no mortar or plaster, and very bad chimneys. There were no proper chimneys stacks, only an old pot, or bucket, to allow, the smoke, to get out. Their windows were small, sometimes there was no glass, at all, only a bag of straw, in place of glass.(continues on next page)
