  1. Marriages generally take place in this district from 1st January to Shrove Tuesday - the day preceeding Ash-Wednesday - which is often called "Salting Tuesday"
    May is considered an unlucky month for marriage so also, is the day that falls on the third day after Xmas day.
    Matches are still made in this district and money is generally given as a dowry.
    Stock or goods are not given nowadays and anyone whom I know does not remember marriages taking place in houses.
