- The Potato CropEverybody grows potatoes on the farm. They grow about an acre each year. The farmers prepare the ground. Some of the farmers use ploughs and others use spades. In former times people used wooden ploughs. Some farmers plant the potatoes in ridges others in drills. The first thing to do is to manure the ground. Then they put the clay up on them. When the stalks grow up the farmers spray tehm with bluestone to protect them from the blight. Starch is made from potatoes.
