A disease known as “blackleg” is sometimes very prevalent in cattle. The people of this district have different ways of curing it. Some turn a sod upside down in the corner of the field in which the affect animal grazed. Others get the leg of a cow or calf that died with the disease and hang it up in the chimney. In some houses throughout the district this leg my still be seen in the chimney.
