- The custom of reciting the psalm De Profundis at the end of Mass is peculiar to Ireland. At the time of the suppression of the monasteries there were chantries in them all, that is, endowments imposing obligations for the celebration of Mass for certain intentions. In the confiscation all these endowments vanished, and the custom arose and became general of reciting at the end of mass the psalm De Profundis for the intentions of the chantry endowments. It continues, and will continue. No other country in the world has it.
