  1. It is a custom among the Irish people to cut a may bush on May Eve and decorate it with flowers and ribbons. It is put up in honour of the Milesians who conquered the Tuatha de Danans on the 1st of May hundreds of years ago. Some people set the May bush on fire in front of the door. It is said that no thunder or lightning can do them no harm for the year.
