- A Marriage Custom
When I was in Castlecomer on my holidays I saw a jipsy woman and a man getting married. After the ceremony the woman and man went outside and the woman's father got a knife and cut the hand of the woman and man. He put both hands together, then the blood of the jipsy would flow into the man and he also woud become a jipsy. When all this was done the jipsys' bandaged their hand and went home on their side cars.
When they would get home they would light a lot of fires and they would dance and sing and have all kinds of sport. There was one special fire which was called "the fire of peace", when this was low the bride would sit at one side of this fire and the Bridegroom at the other side, then they would shake hands of peace over the fire.
