  1. In olden times people steeped ivy leaves in white wine vinegar for twenty four hours and then applied it to corns and it was considered a great corn-cure.
    To make the Sign of the Cross with a goose-berry thorn on a sty in a person's eye is said to cure it.
    When one's throat was sore it was gargled with salt and water which was supposed to cure it.
    A roast fig or two roast laurel leaves were used to cure tooth-ache, and a roast onion for an ear-ache.
    Forge-water was looked upon as a remedy for chillblains.
