- Thatchers were in great demand in old times when all the houses were thatched with wheaten straw. Now as there are not many houses thatched there are very few thatchers in this district.
Some people could put on a coat of thatch that would last for fifteen or twenty years.
When a house was built and roofed the first coat of thatch was sewn on the edges with a sugun or hay rope fastened to a long iron needle with a large eye at the end.
The second coat was fastened to the first with wooden scollops made of hazel twigs and bent in the shape of a hair pin and driven in with a wooden mallet.- Collector
