was in charge of this work. James Blaney Rice of Leitrim was a member of the committee. The meal was given free of charge to those who were in poor circumstances. Peter McMahon of Killyneil aged 69 years remembers his mother getting this meal free of charge. This man says that during this particular winter of 1879-80 his father was only earning 6/= per week. His brother and sisters were without boots all through the winter. In spring time a letter came from the eldest brother who had emigrated to America. In the letter was a five dollar note. This news reached the ears of the committee and after that McMahon's mother was refused meal by the committee.
