The tops are taken off the drills with a graip. then the lumps are broken in the alleys with a clod-breaker. This is a block of wood flat on the top and shaped underneath like the bottom of a boat. This is pulled by two horses and to make it more effective the driver stands on it and his weight helps to break up the lumps.
Then the plough is run up one alley and down the next and throws the soil on the drill on either side.
Last of all the graip is taken again and any big lumps are knocked off the tops of the drills.
In a few weeks the potatoes have to be moulded once again.
The same operation as before is gone through.
