Ar an leathanach seo
- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)until all the pickles of wheat are knocked out. The straw is then tied into bundles or sheaves again. This makes a very good thatch but the flax is better.
When the flax is considered too poor to pay for scutching it is kept for thatching and makes a splendid very lasting roof.
In a new roof the rafters are put on and lathed just as for slates or tiles. The straw is then placed in beds about a foot wide and 6 inches deep beginning at the bottom of the roof and projecting over the wall for nine inches or a foot. When the first length is put on a piece of "Hairy Ned" (- a light rope) is tied to a lath inside then the thatcher puts the needle through the straw and a(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
