- The Big Storm of 1839.An old man by the name of John Kelly, a neighbour of my father was telling him that a considerable amount of damage was caused in the village where he lived. Nearly all the houses were thatched and the fire on the hearth was blown about and the people could do nothing to save their houses from being burned. There was one man living in the district and for a couple of days before the storm the neighbours took notice of him twisting sugans or hay ropes and tying down his little houses and possessions about his place. They did not pay much heed to him doing it, but when the storm was past they knew what he was at. The asked him how did he know the storm was coming and what he answered was, sure anybody would notice it coming. He(continues on next page)
