    Kildare Castle.
    Kildare castle is a very ancient one. It is situated in the town. This castle was built in the year eleven hundred.
    The people who lived in the castle at this time were the Geraldines and their family name was Fitzgerald. The castle is one hundred feet high, and the walls are six feet wide. There is a secret passage underneath the building. It begins at the front door and it goes from that to the Cathedral and then on to Tully Gardens.
    This castle was very important in years gone by, especially during the time of Lord Edward Fitzgerald. He was continually fighting and he used this castle as a stronghold, or fort, as it was sometimes called. He and his army used to shoot down the enemy from the top of the castle. Up to the present day, descendants of this man are still in Co. Kildare. One branch lives at Carton in Maynooth and another at Kilkea castle not far from Athy. In a secret room in the top landing, Lord Edward was cruelly murdered. He was one of the bravest of his clan and he was liked by everybody.
