- The Townland of Granstown.
Some years ago in the days of the Land League there was a meeting of farmers and others at Clough, presided over by the then Parish Curate, Father Cosgrove, of happy memory. When the meeting was over there was a certain number of trusted men, appointed to put up posters on an appointed night. This action being then illegal, these men were told by the priest to go out on the appointed night between the hours of twelve and one and nothing would happen them. My grandfather being appointed for the district of Granstown, went out and placed his poster in position. Returning home, at a lonely spot on the road a great noise stated suddenly, just a few yards behind him, resembling the noise of a cart being driven very fast, he also heard the quick pounding of hoses' hooves on the road. At the same time a man was shouting to him to keep out of the way. This noise followed him for a quarter of a mile to where a river crossed the road. The noise stopping suddenly, my grandfather looked back and although the night was very bright he could not see anything. A great fear then came upon him and the sweat trickled down all over him. He managed to get home, and after a rest he was nothing the worse of his adventure.- Collector
