- As I was sitting by the fireside last night, my father informed me of some details of local happenings of various times. One of them is as follows:-
About five years ago in the month of November, a disastrous fire broke out, in Mr Bowden's farm-yard, which is situated about half a mile from Cullohill school. It was thought that some person smoking in the vicinity of the place, started the hay on fire by throwing the end of a cigarette near it.
When the alarm was made a great crowd hastened to assist in extinguishing the fire. Before very long a great crowd was on the scene.
They helped to draw water to quench the fire. In spite of their efforts to save the hay, it was completely destroyed.
Luckily the straw escaped. Had it caught fire probably the dwelling house and the out-offices, where some cattle had been housed, would be burned, which would cause considerable loss and damage.
People shoud be very careful not to smoke in haggards, especially where hay or straw is stored, in case a spark might reach the ricks, which would set the hay on fire.- Collector
