   It is believed among the people of Ballinakill that there is hidden gold round the district. One story is told relating to Moate. There lived out there a little dwarfish man called Thum Thom. His means of living was carrying travellers across a dangerous piece of the river flowed around the district. We are told that when he found a wealthy passenger he murdered him and took the wealth which he had and hid it in a secret place. He carried on this ugly business for years. At last some brave fellow made an arrangement
