- There was a man named Whelan who lived in Cromogue about the year 1770. He was once very respectable but he began to disrespect "St Fintan's Holy Well" During this time though he was only in his 20th year, his hair was as white as an old women of eighty. This man terminated his life in a strange manner. His corpse was found in the Churchyard of Cromogue on Christmas morning. A verdict after his death says that St. Fintan was celebrating midnight Mass in the Church at Clonenagh. The man from inherent spite against the bishop, refused to assist at his Mass and in punishment for his irreverence he was strangled by one of the spirits who were at that time living in the ruins of the Church.
