The soldier answered ''an inch is as good as a mile''. Thus the saying had its origin. It was one of the commonest sayings of this district.

A fool swallowed a bad egg, and on hearing the chicken chirrup down his neck said: ''You spoke too late''. Even to this day this is a very common saying. A person who was over-anxious to please everyone was said to be ''like Lanna Mochree's dog'' who went part of the road with everyone.
''Good goods are tied in small parcels'' was said in praise of a little fellow with intelligence. ''If he had a shilling in his pocket it would burn a hole through it'' was often said of a spendthrift.
If a man with rough manners , but a kind heart, was being spoken of, it was said that: ''a black hen lays white eggs''. When a person put on airs he was told that he was ''as grand(continues on next page)
