In the hedge school in Dromod the teacher was Miss Mary Duffy.
The hedge- master was routed from Brackloon and through the generosity of Lord De Freyne he was installed in a house on the side of the avenue. Later this hedge school which consisted of two rooms, was used a stable for horses At a later date the slates were purchased by James Coffey, of world fame as a boxer. He used those on his sheds in his farm,(The Glebe) near Loughghyun. Jim's wife is a member of the staff at Gorthaganny school at present.
